Academic Coaching
Support for students to plan effectively, manage workload, and build confidence in their academic approach
My approach to academic coaching is shaped by both professional training and lived experience. I returned to education in my late 40s, completing Access to Higher Education, undergraduate, and postgraduate study, and therefore understand the practical and emotional demands this can bring.

Alongside my own academic journey, I am a trained and accredited coach with a background in applied positive and coaching psychology. This means I work with students in an ethical, non-directive way, focused on building confidence, clarity, and independence, while supporting wellbeing rather than providing tutoring or academic instruction.

I offer academic coaching to students at different stages of their educational journey, including professional qualifications, Access courses, undergraduate degrees, and Master’s study.

Academic coaching can support you to:
-
Plan coursework and assessments, and manage your workload more effectively
-
Break large tasks into realistic, manageable steps
-
Reduce procrastination and feelings of overwhelm
-
Build confidence in your academic ability
-
Develop more sustainable study routines
-
Strengthen independent learning skills
-
Support wellbeing through a more balanced approach to studying
So you can feel more confident, organised and on track with your studies
Case study: Sarah (*pseudonym)
Sarah* is a mature student, wife, mother, and grandmother who also works part time for a charity. She is studying for a BSc (Hons) Psychology degree via distance learning, returning to higher education after a long break.
Balancing multiple roles alongside academic study felt overwhelming at times. Sarah described feeling under constant pressure, often leaving assignments until the last minute and rushing to meet deadlines. Despite being highly motivated, she struggled to find a sustainable way to plan her workload and felt anxious about falling behind.
Through academic coaching, Sarah has developed a clearer, more realistic approach to planning her assessments. Together, we focused on breaking assignments into manageable stages, creating structure around her study time, and building confidence in her ability to start tasks earlier. As a result, Sarah now approaches her assignments with greater calm and clarity, no longer working through the night before deadlines and feeling more in control of her studies. Sarah describes academic coaching as both practical and supportive, helping her to move forward with confidence.
Case study: Alex (*pseudonym)
Alex* is a high-achieving student who consistently maintains strong academic performance and sets exceptionally high standards for themselves. While this drive has supported success, it has also created constant pressure. Alex described feeling trapped in cycles of harsh self-criticism, over-analysing every word of an assignment, and becoming overwhelmed by the fear of getting things wrong.

Despite their capability, the emotional cost of maintaining 'perfect grades' was exhausting. Starting assignments often took far longer than expected, and progress was slowed by self-doubt and a need for everything to feel “just right”.
Through academic coaching, Alex was able to explore their perfectionistic traits with curiosity rather than judgement. Sessions focused on recognising unhelpful thinking patterns, developing self-compassion, and finding more sustainable ways to approach academic work. Over time, Alex began to experience greater ease when starting and completing assignments, with less rumination and a healthier relationship with achievement.

Academic coaching offered Alex a space to reflect, recalibrate expectations, and maintain high standards without the same level of emotional strain.
"Jane inspires me to plan and get started on my assignments with practical tips and supportive coaching. It’s wonderful to be guided by someone who truly understands what I’m going through.”
Sarah* (Mature student)
To make this support accessible, academic coaching sessions are offered at a significantly reduced student rate. For this reason, I limit the number of students I support at any one time.
